Spirit of '88

Field sketches of Bewick's Swans, Ingbirchworth Res., 28th December 2013

I remember the thrill of seeing my first-ever Bewick's Swan at Worsbrough Res back in November 1988. They were quite rare that winter, but not as rare in South Yorks as they are these days!
An adult and juv. were discovered on Ingbirchworth Res. at the back end of last December and, it being 10 years since I'd last seen the species, I really wanted to grill them!
It was a cracking day too, with plenty of sunshine and the two were remarkably obliging on this dog-infested upland res. I've tried to capture the dazzling conditions of the day, with success - sort of!
Ok, the bill on the adult is drawn too long and thin, but that's how it was sketched  - in the moment. I'm more pleased with the plumage of the juv., which was a lovely creamy buff 'n white, and isn't too far off. Well, not by my reckoning anyway!
For Xmas, my girlfriend treated me to a posh set of Faber Castell Polychromos pencils, which were used here as a kind of tribute!

Ps - so far everything is uploading rather 'grainy'! More tampering is called for, I think!
Cheers
